OREANDA-NEWS  In China, a court has sentenced Shi Yun Xin, the former abbot of the legendary Shaolin Monastery, to 24 years in prison for corruption and embezzlement. This is reported by NBC News.

A court in Henan Province also fined a 61-year-old monk 3.5 million yuan (44.4 million rubles). It is alleged that from 2003 to 2025, Shi Yongxin, using the position of abbot, embezzled more than 131 million yuan (about 1.6 billion rubles) personally and in collusion with others. In 2012-2022, he spent more than 151 million yuan (about 1.9 billion rubles) on personal needs.

The court found that Xin also violated Buddhist precepts by maintaining long-term sexual and partnership relationships with several women and having at least one child. The rector admitted his guilt, voluntarily disclosed details unknown to the investigation and repented. The court considered his crimes particularly grave, noting that they "caused serious harm and had a negative impact on the lives of other people."
