OREANDA-NEWS The finance Ministers of Germany and the Netherlands, Lars Klingbeil and Elko Heinen, opposed joint loans from the European Union, noting that they did not want to participate in such initiatives.
"I am against joint loans. The Netherlands has never participated in this and will not," the Dutch finance minister said in an interview with Reuters.
As the agency recalled, in 2020, the member states of the European Union agreed to take a total loan of 800 billion euros to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. Then, as now, a number of countries, including Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands and Germany, were against it, refusing to pay for the countries of Southern Europe.
"This was the first and last time," the German finance minister stressed.
According to Klingbeil, the European Union took out a joint loan because the situation was in crisis, but now there is no crisis.
"In general, we need to solve the financial problems of the EU not through a joint loan policy, but in a different way," Klingbeil said.
