OREANDA-NEWS The Chinese authorities have introduced an annual payment of 500 dollars in order to raise demographics. This is reported by The Financial Times (FT).

The Chinese government will pay families 3,600 yuan for each child under the age of three. This measure was established to stimulate the birth rate in the country.

It is planned that the payment will affect families in which children were born between 2022 and 2024. The measure is expected to affect more than 20 million families.

"These amounts are too small to have a short-term impact on the birth rate or consumption. But this policy marks an important milestone in terms of direct payments to households and may lay the foundation for increased budget transfers in the future," said Zichun Huang, China economist at Capital Economics.

In December 2024, The Wall Street Journal warned that China could face a demographic crisis by 2035. Thus, experts pointed to the shortage of young people and the growing proportion of the elderly population in the city of Fushun.

Later, Beijing expanded its fertility promotion campaign. They try to encourage single people to get married, and families to have more than one child. Local authorities are calling married women and asking about their plans for the birth of a child. After that, some women are invited to antenatal clinics for health checks, and families who already have one or more children are given special benefits so that they can have another one.
