OREANDA-NEWS The Brazilian Senate approved on Tuesday a draft of measures that will allow the authorities to respond to the imposition of duties on the country's goods by other states, including the United States, according to the website of the Brazilian Senate.

"The Senate's plenary session approved a draft this Tuesday that provides for measures to respond to trade barriers imposed by other countries on Brazilian products. Bill 2088/2023, proposed by Senator Jose Da Cruz Marinho of the Podemos party, has been approved... by the Committee on Economic Affairs (CAE) on a final basis," reads a publication on the Senate website.

It is noted that the text of the bill will be submitted to the Chamber of Deputies in five days.

The Senate website also states that the bill provides for "protectionist measures" that could lead to "countermeasures by the executive branch." For example, the Brazilian government may impose "taxes or restrictions" on imports of goods from specific countries, suspend intellectual property rights concessions, and suspend investment concessions.

"The text also provides for diplomatic consultations to mitigate or cancel the consequences of (government's) measures and countermeasures," the Senate said in a publication.

The Senate website notes that the senators approved the vote on the draft and its approval in an additional round at the same meeting. Thus, the commission accelerated the process of reviewing the draft regarding what is provided for by the internal regulations of the Legislative Chamber.
