OREANDA-NEWS The European Union (EU) is currently discussing not possible negotiations with Russia, but ways to put pressure on it and continue supporting Ukraine. This was stated by the head of the European Council, Antonio Costa, following the results of the EU—Moldova summit, TASS reports.
"Unfortunately, we are not talking about negotiations now," Costa said, noting that Moscow, in his opinion, is not ready for dialogue.
He also stressed that the European Union "does not want to be a mediator," as it stands on the side of Ukraine and supports it.
On June 17, it became known that Costa's office had established "brief contacts at the diplomatic level" with the Kremlin "to open communication channels."
This fact has caused discontent in the EU. According to European diplomats, Costa made his "first serious mistake." It is noted that EU leaders publicly defended the head of the European Council, but behind the scenes the discontent "was palpable." In particular, Costa was compared to his predecessor, Charles Michel, who served from 2019 to 2024 and had a reputation for "overreaching and trying to pursue policy without consulting the participating countries."
According to sources, in private conversations, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made it clear that they were "extremely unhappy" with Costa's actions.
