OREANDA-NEWS A U.S. aircraft carrier strike group and a group of three Philippine warships conducted joint exercises in the South China Sea amid growing tensions with China in the region, the Philippine Navy said on Thursday.

The two-day operations on January 3-4 involved the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Carl Vinson, the Princeton missile cruiser, the destroyers Hopper, Kidd, Sterett and William Lawrence of the US Navy, the patrol ships Gregorio del Pilar, Ramon Alcaraz and the landing ship Davao del Sur of the Philippine Navy.

"We are advancing a law-based international order and a free and open Indo-Pacific region in the face of regional challenges," said Philippine Army Chief of Staff General Romeo Browner.

Beijing on Thursday condemned the two-day joint naval exercises of the United States and the Philippines in the South China Sea, saying that playing with muscles would have a negative impact on the management of the situation in the region.

An American aircraft carrier group led by the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson arrived in the South China Sea for patrol on December 27.

According to Washington, the visits of American warships to the South China Sea are aimed at ensuring international law and freedom of navigation in the region.

American actions are causing tension in relations with China. Beijing has been engaged in disputes with several ASEAN countries for decades over the territorial ownership of a number of islands and the surrounding shelf in the South China Sea. We are talking about the Xisha Archipelago (Paracel Islands) and the Nansha Islands (Spratly Islands), near which important shipping routes pass. In addition to China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan (PRC) and Brunei claim the islands.

The situation has worsened in recent years, when Beijing, pointing to its legitimate rights, began to develop the islands and increase its naval presence in the area.
