OREANDA-NEWS US President Donald Trump said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal on Thursday that he takes a daily dose of aspirin more than doctors recommend, explaining the bruising on his hands, which raises questions about his health.
"They say aspirin is good for thinning blood, and I don't want thick blood flowing through my heart," said 79-year-old Trump, explaining why he takes an increased dose. "I take a lot of it, but I've been doing it for years, and it really causes bruises."
Trump's doctor, Dr. Sean Barbabella, told the newspaper that the president takes 325 mg of aspirin daily.
Trump had bruises on his right arm for a long time, as CNN reported, even before his return to the White House. But it attracted more attention after he started trying to hide them with heavy makeup and bandages.
According to the Mayo Clinic, a low dose of aspirin, which can help prevent a heart attack or stroke, is between 75 and 100 mg. It is usually recommended to take 81 mg. The clinic also reports that for aspirin therapy, the daily dose is usually between 75 and 325 mg. Aspirin thins the blood, which can prevent blood clots from forming, but it also carries the risk of excessive bleeding. In recent years, American medical institutions have stopped recommending daily aspirin intake for many adults, as the risks outweigh the benefits, and some suggest stopping aspirin therapy altogether when patients turn 70.
Barbabella said Thursday that Trump "remains in exceptionally good health."
"President Trump's medical examinations and laboratory tests continue to show excellent metabolic health, and have shown that the state of his cardiovascular system corresponds to an age 14 years younger than his actual age. Overall, the president remains in exceptionally good health and is ideally suited to fulfill his duties as commander-in-chief," the statement said, sent to CNN.
