OREANDA-NEWS  UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in China and hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, his representative Stephane Dujarric said.

"Later this evening, the Secretary General will travel to China to attend the summit of leaders of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, which will be held in Tianjin," Dujarric said during a press briefing.

The representative of the Secretary General noted that Guterres is expected to hold talks with Xi Jinping and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

In August, Chinese Ambassador to Russia Zhang Hanhui said in an interview with RIA Novosti that the summit in Tianjin would be the largest since the founding of the SCO.

The SCO is an international organization founded in 2001. It includes India, Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan. On July 4, 2024, Belarus officially joined the organization at the Astana summit. The observer countries are Afghanistan and Mongolia, the SCO dialogue partner countries are Azerbaijan, Armenia, Bahrain, Egypt, Cambodia, Qatar, Kuwait, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Sri Lanka.
