OREANDA-NEWS  Over the past month, watermelons and melons have fallen in price in large retail chains by 40 percent, Stanislav Bogdanov, chairman of AKORT, told RIA Novosti.

"Now the bulk of the Russian harvest has entered the market, and the selection of melons in large retail chains is expanding. In mid—August, watermelons in large retail chains cost from 30 rubles per kilogram, melons — from 80 rubles per kilogram," he said.

Bogdanov recalled that watermelons and melons belong to seasonal categories, so the price dynamics is determined by the timing of maturation and the arrival of a new crop. Since mid—July, the assortment of watermelons has grown by almost 70 percent, and melons - by 80. In stores, customers are offered from three to 11 types of watermelons and from two to ten types of melons.

These are mainly domestic products: the share of Russian watermelons is about 80 percent, melons — about half. The rest of the watermelons are imported from Azerbaijan, Iran and Lebanon, melons from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Spain. Turkey and Brazil supply both.

In addition to the usual Astrakhan watermelons with red flesh, there are varieties with yellow and orange flesh in stores, as well as small seedless watermelons.

According to the X5 retailer, in the first two weeks of August, watermelons and melons began to be bought 4.5 times more often in the Crossroads than in July, and Pyaterochka recorded a twofold increase in sales.

At the same time, Pyaterochka added, melons began to be ordered more often at home — by almost 18 percent compared to August 2025.

Analysts at Crossroads point out that customers are more likely to choose pitted and small watermelons — this segment has grown by more than one and a half times. And the demand for Astrakhan products has increased eightfold — this region has become a marker of quality and naturalness, X5 concluded.
