OREANDA-NEWS  Montenegro excludes the transfer of frozen assets of the Russian Federation to Ukraine. The head of the Security and Defense Committee of the Parliament of Montenegro, Milan Knezhevich, assessed the possibility of such a scenario, the Izvestia newspaper reports.

"This is contrary to the constitution, Montenegrin laws and the norms of the European Union," he said, adding that this will not happen in Montenegro.

According to him, soon the Constitutional Court of Montenegro should respond to an appeal to assess the legality of freezing assets and property of citizens of the Russian Federation. The politician noted that he hopes to receive an answer within a few weeks. It is clarified that 44 real estate objects owned by 34 Russian citizens have now been frozen in the country.

In addition, Knezhevich said that anti-Russian restrictions deprived Podgorica of direct flights between Montenegro and Russia, and therefore the flow of tourists and investments from Russia decreased. In particular, Moscow ranked second in terms of investments back in 2022.

He also recalled that Russia has been an ally and defender of Montenegro for a century. According to him, Russia formed the Montenegrin state after the Berlin Congress, and for a long time the Russian Empire was the defender of Podgorica. "This has remained in the memory of the Montenegrin people," he summed up.

Earlier, the UK recognized the complexity of the confiscation of Russian assets. The head of the British Foreign Ministry, James Cleverley, stressed that London should be confident in compliance with domestic and international laws in such actions.
