OREANDA-NEWS The American corporation Apple has curtailed the development of compact augmented reality glasses. This is reported by Bloomberg.
According to the agency's columnist Mark Gurman, the company stopped the smart glasses development project at the end of January. Apple was going to create a compact headset, an alternative to glasses, which would have built—in displays and work with a Mac computer.
Gurman noted that Apple wanted to release a sequel to the augmented and virtual reality helmet Vision Pro, which was released in February 2024. The company was looking for an idea to create a less bulky and comparatively inexpensive device — the Vision Pro was priced at $3,499 at retail.
According to sources, the smart glasses were originally supposed to work with an iPhone, but the connected smartphone could not provide enough power. Therefore, engineers began to explore the possibility of connecting the device to a computer, but during the tests there were certain problems. Insiders inside the corporation did not name the reasons, as the work on the glasses was not public.
Apple's interlocutors noted that Tim Cook, the head of the company, called the release of the Vision Pro helmet a success. However, the corporation's employees are disappointed with the device. Also, the cancellation of the smart glasses project "undermines morale."
At the end of January, Bloomberg found out that in 2025, Apple will release a smart home device equipped with a screen. This will be the IT giant's first major device for the smart home segment.
