GoPro gives us a glimpse of its Live VR technology

OREANDA-NEWS. July 15, 2016. Virtual reality technology is advancing fast, and GoPro would like to take you along for the ride.

At the National Association of Broadcasters conference (NAB) earlier this year, the company known for its tiny mountable cameras announced a Custom Solutions team tasked with using GoPro's professional imaging and wireless broadcasting technologies to deliver new perspectives, such as experiencing a MotoGP race live from the back of a motorcycle.

As the story goes, in 1985 professional MotoGP racer Randy Mamola was the first to race with an onboard live camera. His son, Dakota Mamola, is now competing on the MotoAmerica circuit using the first-ever GoPro Live VR system. The on-bike setup consists of a camera unit based on the company's Hero4 Black and its HeroCast wireless broadcast technology.

The video above shows some of GoPro's tests with this Live VR technology. The company's Custom Solutions team has also worked with the NHL and the PGA Tour, so it might not be long before we're inside virtual reality to experience a crushing cross-check on the ice or the pressure of sinking a crucial putt on the green -- as they happen and in 360 degrees.
