OREANDA-NEWS. September 28, 2007. In the near future post offices situated in difficult-to access regions will have Internet access due to the satellite channels. Currently, post finished planned establishment of VSAT-terminals in Chechnya, Tyva, Buryatia, Khakassiya, Irkutsk, Magadan and Amursk regions. Satellite communications will be also available in post offices in Altay, Kamchatka, Chukotka, Yakutia and Khabarovsk region. These regions have almost finished delivery and installation of satellite stations. Dagestan can be also attached to these regions.

By the end of 2007 the number of satellite terminals set in post offices in Russia amounted to
1 000 units.

Connection of post offices to broadcast channels is another step of Russian Post to perform its social responsibilities for the customers’ needs. The enterprise is to grant access to global network Internet in public access outlets within the framework of the project оn setting up public access outlets. Permanent satellite terminals let solve the problem in the places not aimed for the land wire communication channels.

Satellite terminals have the number of advantages. They are economical, fast developing in different regions, safe, multifunctional, enabling simultaneous speech and data transmission. Besides of Internet-access VSAT-terminals provide connection to close corporate networks and many other.

The initial transmission speed of the channels set in post offices will amount 64 Kb/s. It is the lowest limit defined for the post offices of 4 and 5 classes (mainly represented by the units in rural settlements). Nevertheless this speed enables to use Internet services in the public access outlets. Postal employees can improve the process of information exchange by corporate network and secure information resources from unauthorised access.
