OREANDA-NEWS. March 5, 2008. Donbass Fuel-Energy Company has reviewed the 2007 operational performance of its coal mining and processing companies. Coal production has increased by 3.0% and ROM coal processing by 15.5%.

Coal production

All the key performance indicators of DTEK’s coal mining block demonstrate positive dynamics. In 2007, the coal output of DTEK’s enterprises went up by 3.0%, compared to 2006 and totalled 15 789.70 thousand tons with thermal coal production having increased 3.5% to total 13218.2 thou. tons. It is the first time in its history that Komsomolets Donbassa mine has achieved annual production of 3.4 m tons to become the second mine in Ukraine in terms of coal output and productivity growth.

The companies of DTEK continue to maintain leading positions in the coal sector: their share in Ukrainian coal output has gone up to 20.9% (in 2006, the indicator was 19.1%): Pavlogradugol OJSC – 16.4% and Komsomolets Donbassa Mine OJSC – 4.5% respectively.

In 2007, the coal mining enterprises of DTEK implemented a number of projects that made it possible to improve operational performance and miners’ safety.

Komsomolets Donbassa Mine OJSC successfully tested a new MB-12 shearer, having achieved over 2000 tons of daily production. Last year, the implementation of a large-scale project Set of Actions on Methane Degassing and Utilization started at the enterprise.

In 2007, the mines of Pavlogradugol OJSC successfully continued the introduction of innovation programmes on roof bolting and mixed (roof bolting and arch supports) methods. To increase the extraction rate, Stepnaya mine designed an investment project DBT manufacturer (Germany) Plough Introduction scheduled for implementation in 2008.

In line with the long-term plan of the replacement of fixed and power equipment, in 2007, Pavlogradugol OJSC replaced two coal winders - 2C6х2.4 at Dneprovskaya mine and 2C4х1.8 at Pavlogradskaya mine - and a VOD-30M #1 fan installation at Blagodatnaya mine, which ensured uninterrupted mine operations.

Coal processing

The coal processing enterprises of DTEK have increased the volume of the processing of ROM coal and output of coal concentrate up to 15.5% and 13.7% respectively, which is related to the increased volume of coal production at the Company’s mines and a growing demand in the market, which is looking for better quality fuel.

The key investment projects in DTEK’s coal enrichment block were implemented at Pavlogradskaya CEP Ltd. The introduction of a dry screening method allowed increased output of coal concentrate, reduced sludge discharge into a sludge pit and steadily increased the quality of the product. The reconstruction of tailings storage started, which made it possible to extend its service life for at least 7 years and prevent the overloading of the sludge pit.

‘Last year, the Company started the implementation of its five-year development strategy. You can see the first results in the coal production and enrichment sector as early as today: despite the challenges we were facing, all the key production indicators demonstrate positive dynamics. In the near future, we expect that the introduction of innovation projects and organizational changes will improve the operational efficiency of DTEK’s coal block and the safety of its operations’, said Evgeniy Romaschin, the Coal Production and Enrichment Director of DTEK.
