OREANDA-NEWS. November 12, 2008. Over 17 tons of fish – two-year-old grass carps and silver carps – were planted into Desnogorsk reservoir, the cooling pond of Smolensk Nuclear Power Plant, by the bio-technologies laboratory of the supporting system department of the plant on Nov 7 2008.

It was the third such action in 2008: over 1,000,000 fries were planted into the reservoir in the spring and almost 500,000 young grass and silver carps in the autumn.

In the last eight years the laboratory has planted over 112 tons of herbivorous fish. The ecological monitoring of the reservoir has shown that the meliorator-fish is gradually reducing the bio-mass of the pond and is purifying the water.  This work is carried out on the basis of recommendations by leading fisheries of Russia.

This program is aimed at improving the quality of the water of the cooling pond and ensuring optimal water supply.
