OREANDA-NEWS. January 30, 2009. Donbass Fuel-Energy Company (DTEK, Donetsk) has extended the period for the submission of tender offers to purchase its emission reduction units (ERU) to 2 February, 2009, ‘Interfax-Ukraine’ was informed by the Company on Tuesday.

According to DTEK Business Development Director, Guerman Ainbinder, the tender announced by the company has aroused the big interest of potential buyers.

‘At the request of the companies which expressed their interest to bid we have put the deadline off for a week. On 2 February 2009 the results will be summed up. The short-list of the companies offering the most attractive conditions will be made to continue the selection process among them’, he explained.

The tender was announced within the framework of the programme on the introduction of a comprehensive methane utilization system at Komsomolets Donbassa Mine. The goal of the project is to utilise up to 100% of coal mine methane.

The installation of the equipment at Komsomolets Donbassa Mine, a part of the DTEK Group, was launched in August 2008. In September 2008, two flares were assembled. Two boilers are planned to be upgraded by May 2009 with the thermal capacity of each rising to 10 MW. Within the next stage, it is planned to put into operation two co-generation units of the total installed capacity about 3 MW.

The funds obtained from the future sale of ERUs will be used for the further implementation of the project on degassing and methane utilization at Komsomolets Donbassa Mine.

It is supposed that the sale of ERUs will enable DTEK to draw additional financing required for the implementation of the project.

The expected environmental benefit from the project will be the reduction of CO2 equivalent emissions by about 720 thousand tonnes in total, the same as removing the emissions of 380,000 cars from the atmosphere.

G. Ainbinder also recalled that the project had passed through the relevant approval procedure, including the receipt of the Letter of Approval from the National Environmental Investment Agency of Ukraine and registration and approval by the Joint Implementation Supervisory Committee (JICS) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

DTEK is delegated the function of the strategic management of the enterprises belonging to Rinat Akhmetov’s SCM Group that build up an efficient operational chain from coal production and enrichment to electricity generation and distribution. The sole owner of DTEK is DTEK Holdings Limited (Cyprus).
