OREANDA-NEWS. August 10, 2012. Ten years ago, in August 2002, Moscow Domodedovo Airport was the first in Russia to launch an express railway route to the center of the capital. The joint project of Russian railway and the Airport was a great success; so many others followed the example set by Domodedovo. After several years, in 2008, Aeroexpress Company became the operator of the route and connected the airports of the Moscow Air Hub to the central railway stations of Moscow city.

Since 2002 the passenger traffic in Domodedovo Airport has increased from 6.7 mln to 25.7 mln of people in 2011, resulting in a significant growth of the passenger traffic in high-speed trains. During these 10 years the express trains transported about 40 mln of people, helping them to save their valuable time in conditions of the growing traffic on the roads and highways of Moscow and Moscow region.

Today 35 pairs of express Aeroexpress trains run between Paveletsky Railway Station and Moscow Domodedovo Airport with 30 minutes intervals. The first Aeroexpress leaves at 4:54 a.m. from the Airport, and the last – at 00:30 from Paveletsky Railway Station. The travel time is 45 minutes.

In the anniversary year of launching the first high-speed train, Moscow Domodedovo Airport, Russian Railways and Aeroexpress LLC took the decision to further develop the railway communications between Domodedovo Airport and Paveletsky Railway Station. Russian Railways is already in the process of implementing the reconstruction of the section between Aviatsionnaya Station and the Airport which also includes laying additional main tracks. The funds in amount of 1 381 bln rubles were allocated this year from the federal budget for the project documentation development and construction works.

- The development of transportation infrastructure is one of the key factors of development of the largest air hub in the country, - Igor Borisov, Moscow Domodedovo Airport Director, noted – We are pleased that the airport’s plans to improve the transport accessibility and the quality of passenger services coincide with the plans of JSC “Russian Railways”, Moscow Railways, and “Aeroexpress” LLC.

Following the laying of new main track on the section between Aviatsionnaya Station and the Airport it is planned to lay one more main track between Paveletsky Railway Station and Domodedovo Station. These projects would reduce the interval between the Aeroexpress trains running on the route Domodedovo Airport - Moscow to 15-20 minutes and the number of trains will be increased up to 58 pairs per day.

This increase in traffic will require the construction of the new modern and comfortable high-capacity railway station at Domodedovo Airport. This project has already been launched. The new railway station will have four tracks and two platforms. Visitors and passengers of Domodedovo Airport when leaving the trains will enter a modern indoor gallery leading straight to the different levels of the air terminal.
