OREANDA-NEWS. September 10, 2012. John Prior, advisor to general manager of the Nuclear Energy Corporation of South Africa (NESCA), visited JSC MSZ (OJSC MSZ), a subsidiary of TVEL – a fuel company of Rosatom. The delegation also included representatives of JSC TVEL and JSC TENEX.

Delegates visited the facilities producing fuel pellets, fuel elements and fuel assemblies. At the production site the delegates could take a view of the fuel fabrication, its scales and organization.

During the visit John Prior noted that coal has the largest share in South Africa’s energy mix, while the nuclear energy accounts for only 5% of the market. According to the national power industry development plan, 9.6 GWs of nuclear capacities will be commissioned by 2030. As a purpose of his visit, Mr. Prior outlined NECSA’s plans for localization of nuclear fuel fabrication in South Africa, as well as the study of the Russian experience in nuclear fuel production.

At the end of the meeting Mr. Prior thanked Russian colleagues for their warm welcome and emphasized the importance of developing the further cooperation between Russia and the Republic of South Africa.
