OREANDA-NEWS. January 22, 2013. Alexey Mordashov, Chief Executive of OAO Severstal, one of the world’s leading steel and steel-related mining companies, and Chairman of the World Steel Association (worldsteel), participated in worldsteel’s first ever interactive Twitter debate, entitled Steel: The Next Hero – Looking to the Future.

Along with Mr. Mordashov, other industry experts who participated in the debate included: Dr Edwin Basson (Director General, worldsteel); Dr Wolfgang Eder (CEO, voestalpine AG); Prof Harry Bhadeshia (Cambridge University); Dr Richard Thackray (Tata Steel Lecturer in Steelmaking, University of Sheffield and Chair of IOM3 Iron and Steel Society); Roger Manser (Journalist and founder of Steel Business Briefing), and Jim Woods (Senior Director, Communications, Steel Recycling Institute).

The debate took place to coincide with the launch of The White Book Of Steel, a worldsteel publication that celebrates the history of steel and looks to the future of the steel industry, discussing the need for more ground-breaking innovations similar to the revolutionary process invented by Sir Henry Bessemer, the  Nineteenth Century English inventor and industrialist.

The participants took questions from Twitter users and discussed the challenges that steel industry may face in the future as well as some of the opportunities that a career in the steel provides to “the next generation of Bessemers”.

Alexey Mordashov commented: “A career in steel industry provides opportunity to be in a really international environment, to understand global processes, to participate in changes and to bring innovations.”
