OREANDA-NEWS. Vale had a head start on the new legislation from the International Maritime Organization to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping operations. Before the legislation had even come into force, we had already defined and implemented our Energy Efficiency Management Plan on board our ships. The measures we took reflect our concern with keeping our fleet environmentally friendly, in addition to improving our operational performance.

The regulation, which came into force in January of this year, requires that a plan for reducing greenhouse gas emissions be developed and enforced on board vessels. Another stipulation of the legislation is that new ships, with delivery dates starting July 2015, comply with an index that gauges greenhouse gas emissions in relation to the transported cargo.

Vale fulfills all requirements by adhering to its Energy Efficiency Management System, training its crews, optimizing routes and speeds, and using the latest equipment and most efficient methodologies.
