OREANDA-NEWS. Alexey Mordashov, the CEO of Severstal who has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the World Steel Association (worldsteel) for the past year, participated in worldsteel’s 47th Annual Conference held from October 5 to October 8 in San Paulo, Brazil. Mr. Mordashov also chaired worldsteel’s 2013 annual meeting of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee which took place during the conference.

Following the conference on October 9 Alexey Mordashov handed over the position of Chairman of worldsteel to Mr. Joon-Yang Chung, CEO of the Korean company POSCO, in accordance with worldsteel’s rules that require the appointment of a new Chairman each year. Mr. Joon-Yang Chung was elected by the Board of Directors worldsteel.

Edwin Basson, CEO of the World Steel Association, thanked Alexey Mordashov for his leadership and active engagement over the past year. Alexey Mordashov will now become one of the association’s Vice Chairmen of the Board of Directors.

At the worldsteel conference Mr. Mordashov commented: “The steel industry is a global industry that is developing dynamically. The World Steel Association’s function is to contribute to developing knowledge and understanding of global and regional trends in the industry and to provide a platform to promote and develop the industry’s interests on a global basis.”

Additionally, Alexey Mordashov invited the worldsteel members to Russia for the 2014 annual conference which will take place next October in Moscow for the first time in the World Steel Association’s history.

Alexey Mordashov commented: “On behalf of the Russian Steel Association I would like to invite you to the next worldsteel conference which will be held in Moscow in October 2014. Russia is home to a number of steel producing companies. It is also famous for its culture and rich history. I am sure your participation in the conference will be very beneficial and useful for your business and will also provide the opportunity for you to enjoy and engage with Russian culture and art.”

Severstal became the first Russian member of the World Steel Association in 2001.
