15 September, 2014, Vienna – Today on the sidelines of the 59th IAEA General Conference in Vienna Mr. S. Kirienko, Rosatom’s Director General, and Mr. Ole Harbitz, Director General of the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority, signed the Protocol on practical measures to be taken to meet the commitments under the Agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Kingdom of Norway on Early Notification of Nuclear Accidents and Exchange of Information on Nuclear Facilities.

OREANDA-NEWS. The Protocol includes new procedures for information exchange on various aspects of nuclear and radiation safety which make the entire process between the two countries more systematized. The new document covers nuclear power plants including the Kolskaya NPP (units 1-4) and Leningradskaya NPP (units 1-4), ship reactors,  fresh and spent nuclear fuel storages, research and other reactors located on the territory of Norway and within the 300-kilometer frontier area in the Russian Federation. In addition, it envisages regular joint trainings and consultancies.

This package of joint measures is undoubtedly to strengthen environmental control in the region, and develop neighborly relations and cooperation in various areas.

The signed Protocol has been developed in full compliance with the international commitments and national laws of the two countries, as well as the IAEA documents. In foreseeable future, similar documents are also planned to be signed with other countries sharing the borderline and common interests with the Russian Federation to ensure the nuclear and environmental safety.

Russia and Norway have had a successful history of cooperation working together in the area of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste management, and providing equipment for the Kolskaya NPP and Leningradskaya NPP.
