OREANDA-NEWS Indonesia has been able to purchase Russian oil at a discount thanks to the diplomatic efforts of the authorities and the country's accession to the BRICS, said Satya Vidya Yudha, a member of the National Energy Council of Indonesia.
"Indonesia has been given the opportunity to purchase Russian oil at a discount... Previously, Indonesia faced serious obstacles to conducting transactions with Russia, which has been under US sanctions since 2022," Yudha said on INAnews TV.
According to him, the situation has changed since Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto came to power.
"Indonesia's accession to the BRICS, combined with Prabowo's active diplomacy in both Washington and Moscow, has opened up the opportunity for Indonesia to buy Russian oil without the risk of falling under sanctions," said the member of the Energy Council.
Agreements on the import of 150 million barrels of Russian oil by the end of 2026 were reached following the April visit of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to Russia. The country's Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, said on May 11 that the first deliveries of Russian oil could begin in the next one to two weeks.
