OREANDA-NEWS After the lifting of US sanctions, Russian wines are able to compete with European beverages in the American market. This is how Boris Titov, the special representative of the President of the Russian Federation for relations with international organizations for achieving sustainable development goals, assessed the possibility of competition, as quoted by TASS.

According to the main shareholder of the Abrau-Durso group of companies, due to its price-quality ratio, Russian wines can compete in the middle class.

"The contests confirm that the bar for our wines is very high, but so far the brand is even less well-known. Russian wine is still more surprising. Thank God, it's a pleasant surprise, but still a surprise," he explained.

According to the businessman, many Russian wines can already compete with European ones — this has been facilitated by the steady development of the industry, as well as the fact that European wines are increasingly more expensive in the American market.

In the first half of 2026, retail wine sales in Russia fell by 2.7 percent. According to Rosalokoltabakkontrol (RATK), sales of grape wine decreased to 26.4 million decaliters (dal) in six months. Fruit wines sold 895.7 thousand dal (minus 37.4 percent), liqueur wines — 551.1 thousand dal (minus 5.6 percent). Sparkling wine sales increased by 3.9 percent to 10 million dal.
