OREANDA-NEWS   The Australian authorities have imposed new sanctions against ten citizens from Russia and Belarus, as well as 35 Russian organizations, follows from the statement of the country's Foreign Minister Penny Wong on her official website.

"Australia has imposed targeted sanctions against 35 organizations of the Russian defense, technology and energy sectors, as well as ten individuals, including Russian ministers and senior officials, as well as high-ranking military personnel from Belarus," Wong said in a statement.

As noted, these measures should "exert maximum pressure on those individuals and legal entities who play a role in direct or indirect support" of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine. According to the head of the Australian Foreign Ministry, companies involved in nuclear energy and the extraction of Arctic resources were also sanctioned.

According to the statement, sanctions have also been imposed against the First Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Andrei Belousov, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Chernyshenko and high-ranking Belarusian military officials.

According to Wong's statement, the sanctions list includes the largest Russian defense enterprises, including the largest Russian manufacturer of military helicopters and its CEO.

Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Russian President Vladimir Putin called its goal "the protection of people who have been subjected to bullying and genocide by the Kiev regime for eight years." He noted that the special operation was a forced measure, Russia "was left with no chance to do otherwise, security risks were created such that it was impossible to react by other means." According to him, Russia has been trying to negotiate with NATO on the principles of security in Europe for 30 years, but in response it has faced either cynical deception and lies, or attempts of pressure and blackmail, while the alliance, despite Moscow's protests, is steadily expanding and approaching the borders of the Russian Federation.
