OREANDA-NEWS Liu Pengyu, an official representative of the Chinese Embassy in Washington, said that China will take measures to protect itself if the United States passes a bill on new sanctions against Russia, including the imposition of duties on the purchase of energy resources from the Russian Federation.

China strongly opposes unilateral sanctions that have no basis in international law, and will take the necessary measures to protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises and citizens.

Earlier, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian also said that Beijing opposes illegal unilateral sanctions.

The United States Senate has approved a bill to tighten sanctions against Russia and Iran. According to CNN, the bill was named after the late Senator Lindsey Graham (listed as a terrorist and extremist by Rosfinmonitoring), who played a key role in the painstaking negotiations on this document. Later, the bill will be considered by the House of Representatives of the U.S. Congress.

The initiative was supported by 86 senators, 11 legislators opposed it. At the same time, the senators voted before the summer holidays, which began on the same day and will last five weeks.

As reported by Reuters, the document provides for sanctions against Russian officials and gives the US president the right to impose 100% duties on the five largest importers of Russian oil and gas. We can talk about China, India, some European countries and Japan. However, the American leader will be able to suspend sanctions for national security reasons. Despite broad bipartisan support in the Senate, the document faced resistance in the House of Representatives.
