OREANDA-NEWS Iran has appealed to the UN Security Council to urgently hold a meeting due to the Israeli airstrikes. This was reported by the IRNA news agency, referring to a letter sent by the Iranian permanent mission to the headquarters of the international organization.
"Iran has sent an urgent letter to the UN Security Council demanding to condemn the Israeli attack, and has also requested an emergency meeting," the agency quoted the text of the appeal.
Earlier on the night of June 13, Israel launched a large-scale military operation called "Rising Lion." According to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the strikes were aimed at "the heart of Iran's nuclear enrichment program."
Tehran's reaction was immediate. The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said that Israel will be held accountable for its actions. The Iranian authorities also threatened a swift and harsh response.
