OREANDA-NEWS  Japan will increase the fee for issuing residence permits for foreigners tenfold. Bloomberg reports on the relevant plans of the authorities, citing a statement from the country's Immigration Control Agency. The agency notes that immigration control is being tightened "against the background of a record number of people wishing to live in the country."

From October 1, the cost of changing or updating the status of a stay will rise from a single rate of 6 thousand yen (a dollar is about 160 yen) to 10-75 thousand yen, depending on the length of stay. For those who apply for permanent resident status (residence permit), the cost of the service will increase 20 times, up to 200 thousand yen.

At the same time, tourists have been paying five times more for a single—entry visa since July than before - 15,000 yen instead of 3,000.

In 2025, the number of foreigners in the country reached a record 4.1 million, an increase of 9.5 percent, which increased budget spending on measures to regulate the stay of new residents by 39 percent, to 48.9 billion yen.

In this regard, Justice Minister Hiroshi Hiraguchi noted that the sharp increase in fees takes into account the real costs of paperwork and ensuring the conditions of stay of foreigners.

Immigration to Japan is growing against the background of a serious population decline, which has already become one of the structural problems of the country's economy, which weakens the prospects for GDP growth, and the national currency is falling.
