OREANDA-NEWS The South Korean army is providing assistance in the situation with a fire on the Russian vessel Kaltan off the South Korean Ulsan, warships and a patrol plane were sent, the Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea reported.

The Russian vessel "Kaltan" from Vladivostok is burning near the South Korean Ulsan, the shipowner is LLC "Dalrybprom". There is a rescue operation and the elimination of the fire. According to preliminary data from the Far Eastern Transport Prosecutor's Office, 21 crew members out of 25 were evacuated. Two of those rescued received minor burns, the rest were not injured. Nineteen crew members of the Kaltan have already been brought ashore, two more are helping to search for four comrades who disappeared during the emergency. "Today, on April 21, the South Korean Navy sent a patrol plane, a patrol boat and a rescue ship, they are supporting search and rescue activities," the military said. It is reported that at about 1.20 (19.20 Thursday Moscow time), the army received a message from the coast guard about a burning fishing vessel of Russia and sent a nearby destroyer of the King Sejong the Great type to the scene, as well as a speedboat that was on duty in Busan. They assisted in search and rescue operations. A military aircraft was also sent, which fired 42 flares into the air.

It is noted that the South Korean army, for humanitarian reasons, "actively" helps foreign vessels that fall into an emergency situation in the area of its responsibility.

According to the newspaper "Kunming Ilbo", the coast guard and firefighters were also mobilized to help the Russian vessel, a total of 12 boats and one helicopter, as well as other fishing boats located near the scene of the incident.
The fire on the ship is almost extinguished. It is expected that due to the deterioration of weather conditions, the affected Kaltan will be towed to the port of Ulsan by about 13.00 (07.00 Moscow time).

Initially, after repairs in Busan, the ship sailed towards the Sea of Okhotsk. In the Korean Strait, 37 miles east of the port of Busan, the captain gave an emergency signal. The crew tried to fight the fire on their own, but it didn't work out, then the captain gave the command to get off on life rafts: 21 people, including the captain, went down. The executive officer and three other crew members remained on board, presumably to fight the fire.
