OREANDA-NEWS The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs has allocated 1.5 million francs for humanitarian organizations providing assistance to the residents of Karabakh in this region and in Armenia.

"Switzerland is strengthening its support for the civilian population in Armenia and the region (in Karabakh - ed.), allocating about 1.5 million francs (about 1.63 million dollars - ed.). This amount will be distributed among the main humanitarian organizations operating on the ground," the ministry said in a statement published on its website.

It is noted that 500 million francs (about $540 million) have been allocated to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). This assistance complements the amount of 1 million francs that Bern has already allocated to the ICRC for its operations in the region in 2023.

On September 19, 2023, Azerbaijan launched a military operation in Karabakh, one of the goals of which was the dissolution of all organs of the unrecognized republic. Yerevan described these actions as aggression, stating that there are no Armenian units in Karabakh. A day later, with the mediation of Russian peacekeepers, a ceasefire agreement was reached, among the conditions of the truce, in particular, the disarmament of Armenian formations was indicated.

Following the results of the hostilities, the unrecognized republic in Karabakh announced the termination of its existence on January 1, 2024. In addition, more than 100,000 Armenians of Karabakh, which is the overwhelming majority of the region's population, left it through the Lachin corridor leading to Armenia.
