OREANDA-NEWS The main stage of the construction of the Paks-2 NPP under the Russian project has begun in Hungary. The pouring of concrete, which, in accordance with IAEA standards, means the official transition to the status of a plant under construction, took place on February 5 with the participation of Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto and Russian Ambassador to Hungary Evgeny Stanislavov. This is reported by TASS.
The symbolic start of the building process was given by pressing a button. Likhachev, in turn, noted that work on Paks-2 means the formation of orders worth more than three trillion rubles for Russian companies.
The Soviet-designed Paks nuclear power plant, Hungary's only nuclear power plant, was completed in the mid-1980s. The NPP operates on four power units, and in 2009 the construction of two more units was approved. In December 2014, Rosatom signed a contract for their construction, and in 2022 it received a ten-year construction permit from the Hungarian authorities for the Paks-2 project. As a result of the commissioning of these capacities, Hungary plans to fully meet its electricity needs through domestic generation, abandoning imports.
Earlier this week, it became known that the Bulgarian government again, as an exception, allowed the administration of the country's only NPP Kozloduy to continue purchasing the necessary equipment and materials in Russia.
