OREANDA-NEWS  The construction of Kazakhstan's first Balkhash nuclear power plant will cost $16.5 billion. The head of the Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan for Atomic Energy Almasadam Satkaliyev told reporters about this, Interfax reports.

According to him, "the project will be financed by an export loan from Russia." Satkaliev did not specify how much of the cost of the station would be covered by the loan.

Later, the press service of the ministry clarified that the total cost of the project is estimated at $ 16.4 billion, of which $ 14.4 billion is needed for the construction of power units, and the remaining funds are for infrastructure, security systems and fuel for the warranty period.

In turn, Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev previously indicated that part of the financing "will remain with the Kazakh side." As for the timing of pouring the first concrete, he expressed the hope that it would be possible to move to this stage in the current decade. "By the end of the year, all the technical conditions, nuances, and subtleties of this project will be clear to us," he said.

In April, Satkaliyev assumed that Russia would provide Kazakhstan with 85 percent of the funds in the form of a loan for the construction of a nuclear power plant. The remaining funds will be allocated by the Government of Kazakhstan.

Earlier it was reported that Satkaliev and Likhachev signed an agreement on the construction of the Balshakh NPP during the state visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Kazakhstan.
