OREANDA-NEWS Canada has been responsible for the entry of thousands of Nazis since May 1945, and the resignation of Speaker of the House of Commons Anthony Rota was Ottawa's first step towards acknowledging responsibility. This was stated by the special envoy for combating anti-Semitism of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel Michal Kotler-Wunsch, reports The Jerusalem Post.

The next steps should include Canada's recognition of its history of almost 2,000 documented Nazis who immigrated to the country after World War II and built their lives reconciling with their past," the diplomat said.

She also added that the incident that took place in the Canadian Parliament requires education on anti-Semitism, the Holocaust and the history of World War II.

Earlier, former Canadian Justice Minister Irwin Kotler said that the country had become a haven for Nazi war criminals. According to the politician, everyone was alarmed by what had happened. At the same time, he wondered how Yaroslav Hunka got to Canada at all and was not punished for his actions. The ex-minister stressed that this indicates the indifference and inaction that prevailed in the Canadian government.
