OREANDA-NEWS. May 8, 2009. The event brought together heads of state and government of the EU and Eastern Partnership initiative member countries. 

The summit was opened by Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek who stressed the importance of the Eastern Partnership programme.

President Ilham Aliyev said the programme will give impetus to developing and expanding the Azerbaijan-EU relations.

The President touched upon Azerbaijan`s political and economic progress and democratic reforms, saying “all this serves to bring our country closer to the European family”.

President Ilham Aliyev named Azerbaijan one of the European Union`s very important partners, noting the country`s contribution to ensuring Europe`s energy security.

“We enjoy a high level of cooperation in this regard, and Azerbaijan wants to expand the cooperation with the European Union in non-energy sector as well,” he said.

The Azerbaijani leader also touched upon Armenia`s aggression against his country.

The summit approved the Eastern Partnership programme.
