OREANDA-NEWS A new material for absorbing "harmful" laser radiation has been developed by NCFU scientists. It can be used to create more accurate non-contact temperature meters, powerful spotlights, and laser devices for medicine, cosmetology, and mechanical engineering. The results are presented in the Journal of the European Ceramic Society.
The work of a laser can be imagined as the singing of a well-coordinated choir of thousands of people. In order for the voices to sound in unison, a conductor is needed who can "identify" fake performers who violate musical harmony. In a laser, such a "conductor" is special materials that absorb so-called parasitic radiation, the North Caucasus Federal University (NCFU) said. "If this parasitic radiation is suppressed, the efficiency of the laser will increase, which is important for devices used for cutting and welding in mechanical engineering, as well as for performing surgical operations with a laser scalpel," explained Vitaly Tarala, one of the authors of the development, head of the Scientific Laboratory of Advanced Materials Technologies and Laser Media at NCFU.
