OREANDA-NEWS  On 28 November was announced, that at the meeting of the Russian corporate partners of World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Tetra Pak highlighted its activities as part of implementation of sustainable development strategy both in Russia and globally.

“Tetra Pak perceives sustainable development as a balanced combination of profitable growth and a corporative environmental and social responsibility  – says Alexander Nikolaev, Vice President of Tetra Pak Russia. – The goal stated by the company’s founder Ruben Rausing - “A package shall save more than it costs” - remains a major cornerstone of Tetra Pak strategy. Today, when the planet is facing global climate change and other threats, the strategy’s environmental component gains more significance and influence. In practical terms Tetra Pak sustainable environmental policy means that the company takes comprehensive steps to use natural resources more efficiently, pays special focus on renewable sources, reduction of environmental impact and waste recycling.

Tetra Pak carton packages are 75% paperboard which comes from wood, a renewable raw material. The company contributes to the sustainable forest management and development of  pulp-and-paper industry by supporting FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) international certification. This certification allows to trace the legality of all wood origin and its conformity to international environmental and social standards. FSC certification makes it possible to ensure traceability of Tetra Pak cardboard production – from the forest to the production of paperboard for Tetra Pak packaging material by our suppliers, and then along the whole value chain. .

Rational use, preservation and sustainable growth of forest resources are an important part of  Tetra Pak strategy. In Russia the company in cooperation with WWF is involved in a long-term support of research and practical activities to restore deciduous forest of the Ugra national park. Thanks to Tetra Pak financial support the woodland area of the park has increased by at least 25 hectares in the recent years.

To further reduce environmental impact of its activities the company is focused on efficient use of energy. Together with leading international corporations, Tetra Pak participates in WWF Climate Savers Program. By 2010 Tetra Pak has committed to reduce CO2 emissions by 10 per cent. Steadily increasing its production volumes, Tetra Pak at the same time reduces the power consumption by applying environmentally sound technologies.

Carton package waste is 100 per cent recyclable. In 2007, 22 billion of.Tetra Pak packages were recycled globally. In Russia, Tetra Pak production waste has been recycled for over 10 years already. In 2008, the collection and industrial recycling of Tetra Pak post-consumer packaging waste was launched in Russia.
