OREANDA-NEWS. June 09, 2009. In January-May 2009, Murmansk Commercial Seaport OJSC handled 6.303 million tonnes of cargo (+3.8%, year-on-year), the company states. In May MCS handled 1.09 million tonnes of cargo (-15%, year-on-year) including 54,300 tonnes of coastal trade cargo (+54.7%, year-on-year), 200 tonnes of import cargo and 1.035 million tonnes of export cargo, mainly export of dry bulk. Export of coal totaled 911,200 tonnes, apatite concentrate - 70,200 tonnes. Transshipment of non-ferrous metal amounted to 36,200 tonnes.

In May MCS subsidiary Agrosfera CJSC handled 99,500 tonnes of fertilizers.

In May 2009, the port handled 38 vessels (including 16 vessels with coal) and unloaded 15,665 wagons (including 13,839 wagons with coal).

In the 5-month period, the port handled 210 vessels (including 91 vessels with coal) and 88,410 wagons (including 75,281 wagons with coal).

JSC Murmansk Commercial Seaport was established in 1994 on base of the public enterprise and nowadays it is one of Russia’s busiest ports. The port has 17 berths with total length of some 3,000 meters. The length and depth enables the port to handle vessels of up to 15.5 meters in draft and over 265 meters in length. The port mainly handles non-ferrous metal and alloys, rolled ferrous metal, coal, apatite concentrate, alumina; scrap metal and iron-ore pellets, chemicals in big-bags, construction materials, foodstuffs, technological equipment and containerized cargo. In 2008 the company handled 14,329,183 tonnes of cargo.

Major shareholder of Murmansk Commercial Seaport is Specialized Project Investments B.V. (63.53% of ordinary shares). The state owns 34% of the company’s shares.
