OREANDA-NEWS. November 12, 2009. Lietuvos Energija signed a contract with the Ukrainian company Ukrenergy Trade ZRt regarding a possibility to supply electricity in 2010.

“This is the result of yet another successfully rounded up negotiations, in an attempt to ensure electricity supply following the closure of Ignalina nuclear power plant”, - said Mr. Edvardas Vazgela, Director of Market Administration Department of Lietuvos Energija. According to him, agreements granting possibilities for Lithuania to receive electricity from as many countries as possible reduce the risk of electricity supply disruption.

According to Mr. E.Vazgela, a flexible electricity supply contract with the Ukraine has been signed: under the contract, Lithuania will be able to purchase up to 0.735 terrawatthours (TWh) of electricity and if necessary – even more.

Electricity, imported from the Ukraine will be delivered to the power exchange. In 2010 based on market conditions, about 35 per cent of electricity will be purchased from Estonian, Latvian, Scandinavian, Ukrainian, Russian and Belarussian generators to cover the needs of Lithuania.

It is expected, that in 2010 up to 3 bn kWh will be generated by Lietuvos Elektrine power plant, 0.35 bn kWh – by the renewables (hydro power plants, wind parks), up to 1.15 bn kWh – by thermal power plants of Lithuania.

The overall expected electricity demand of Lithuania in 2010 is roughly 9.1 billion kilowatthours (kWh).
