OREANDA-NEWS. February 05, 2010. A new gas recovery system has been launched at Flare Section of ORLEN Lietuva Refinery. The new system treats gas by removing sulphur from it, and pumps the gas back to the fuel system. The advantages of the modern system are: improved safety, economy on energy resources and reduced pollution, reported the press-centre ORLEN Lietuva.

The flare system is the system which protects the Refinery’s units against excess pressure. In case of any interruption in the technological process, excess pressure is routed through safety valves over to the flare system; thereby, the unit is protected against malfunctions. Now, gas is not only trapped (collected) and returned back for refining, but also treated.

‘By upgrading the flare system, we have also implemented an environmental project – reduced SO2 emissions through the Refinery’s stacks. Actually, this is a modernization project because the installed system has larger capacity, is more efficient and modern’, said Viktoras Vasilavicius, Director of Refining Production of the company. He also acknowledged that operation of the new system is more difficult and requires more responsibility from operators and dispatchers.
