The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is an international industry trade group of airlines headquartered in Montreal, Canada. The executive European office is situated in Geneva, Switzerland
IATA was formed on 28th of August 1919 in Hague (Netherlands) as alliance of airlines under the name the International Air Traffic Association. Its purpose was to organize a safe, regular and cost-effective air transportation of people and goods, and assist in work activities of all enterprises involved in the international air transportation. The association which was organized after World War I felt apart because of World War II.

The modern IATA is the successor to the International Air Traffic Association and was founded in Havana (Cuba) in April 1945. At its founding, IATA had 57 members from 31 nations, mostly from Europe and North America.

IATA’s stated mission is to represent, lead and serve the airline industry in such areas as secure transportation, flight arrangements, maintenance, price setting, aviation safety, international standards formation together with ICAO etc.

The major focus of IATA is an organization of mutual settlements between air transport companies, based on the sales of air tickets of neutral format. The IATA Clearing House has started its activity in 1948 providing the mutual settlements between IATA Accredited Passenger Sales Agents. And in 1972 the Billing and Settlement Plan, BSP IATA, was created. Later this system covered the entire world air transport except the U.S. (who has created its own system –ARC first, which was used later as a base for the BSP) and CIS countries (except Moldova).
International Air Transport Association has announced the full transition to electronic tickets system for air flights sales in 2007.
IATA, also, assigns IATA Airport Codes, airline codes and classification codes for airplanes.
