OREANDA-NEWS. July 07, 2011. Throughput of the port of Klaipeda (Lithuania) in January-June of this year grew by 22.5% compared with the same period of 2010, to 18.39 million tons, the Port Authority said.

Transshipment of petroleum products rose by 9.2% to 4,79 million tons, of natural and chemical liquid fertilizers grew by 1.8 times, to 737,490 tons, dry fertilizer increased by 38.2%, to 4,85 million tons, shipments of building materials rose by 6.7% to 589,930 tons. Container traffic surged by 49.3% to 210,604 TEUs, Ro-Ro cargo rose by 20.1% to 126,328 units. Passenger traffic grew by 4.4% to 147,708 people.

Butinge terminal’s throughput climbed 8% to 4,22 million tons.

In June, freight traffic increased by 27.3% on last year’s figure, to 3,14 million tons. Monthly volume of oil products grew by 30.9%, to 935,600 tons, shipments of fertilizers increased by 31.3% to 909,000 tons. Handing of rolling cargoes rose by 6.2% to 377,210 units. Container volume was up 31.5% to 34,555 TEUs.

State-run Port of Klaipeda, the northernmost ice-free port on the East coast of the Baltic Sea, is the largest Lithuanian transport hub, connecting sea and inland traffic lanes. There are 17 stevedore companies, shipyards and other operators at the port, providing a broad range of services. In 2010, Port of Klaipeda cargo throughput increased year-over-year by 10.9%, to 31,27m tons.
