OREANDA-NEWS. September 30, 2011. The UN Private Sector Forum 2011, an annual high-level roundtable discussion, took place at the UN Headquarters. SCM was among the delegates who discussed access to electricity, renewables, water and food in different regions of the world.

The UN Private Sector Forum 2011 initiated by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon took place during the 66th Session of the UN General Assembly in New York on 20 Sepember. This year's Forum focused on the role of the private sector in supporting the Secretary-General’s strategy on Sustainable Energy for All. This strategy aims to achieve three major goals by 2030: achieving universal access to modern energy services, improving energy efficiency and increasing the share of energy generated from renewable resources.

Five roundtable discussions dealt with energy and food security, attended by about 300 participants, with approximately half from the public sector and half from the private sector. They included UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the UN Global Compact Executive Director Georg Kell, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the 38th Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger and others. SCM was represented at the Forum by Director of International and Investor Relations Jock Mendoza Wilson.

"Energy issues are now much-discussed in the world. They are extremely relevant to the SCM Group and the whole Ukraine as well," said Jock Mendoza-Wilson. "As the biggest national investor, SCM does not stand aside from the sustainable energy problems:  every year we invest a lot in modernisation of our production companies, which means we improve their energy efficiency. In the first half of 2011 alone we invested some UAH 7bn in this area. We understand, however, that efforts of one company are not enough. Evidently, sustainable use of energy is coming into spotlight for every citizen amid energy price hikes. As early as mid-October we will present the first energy efficiency rating for Ukrainian regions, which will indicate energy efficiency improvement areas. We hope our rating will be a roadmap that will help Ukraine to improve its energy position," stated Jock Mendoza-Wilson.
