On the updated information of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fish and Hunting Industry of the Republic of Karelia in 2011 total catch level of water bioresources by enterprises of the fish branch of Karelia has made more than 78,000 tons, that is 9 percent more than in 2010.

Deep-sea fishery in 2011 was carried out by 20 enterprises which were assigned catch quotas of water bioresources by the Federal Agency for Fishery of the Russian Federation.

In the Barents Sea fishermen of Karelia have caught more than 48,000 tons of cods and haddocks (17% more than in 2010). They have used the catch quota of cod and haddock assigned to the republic in full. Total volume of bottom-fishing in the Barents Sea by all enterprises of Karelia has made 49,500 tons. In 2011 fishermen of Karelia have caught 7,600 tons of capelin, that is 31% more than the standard of 2010.

Fishermen also worked in zones of the foreign states and conventional zones of the Atlantic. The catch quotas of mackerels in the Faeroe economic zone and in the conventional area of North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC) was used in full. The general catch has made 3,000 tons, that is 31% more than in 2010. The Atlantic herring catch quotas were used in full (the catch has made 14,400 tons), as well as catch quotas of halibut in the conventional zone of Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) and in the economic zone of Greenland (its total catch has made 303 tons). In 2011 fishermen of Karelia were a success in catching blue whitings, which catch has made 734 tons.

The general catch of ocean fish by enterprises of the fish branch of Karelia has made 75,500 tons, that is 11% more than the standard of 2010.

Fishing in the White Sea in 2011 was conducted by 4 enterprises and 31 sole traders. Total catch there has made 269 tons, or 46 tons more than in 2010. The catch of White Sea herrings has made 57 tons, and the catch of navaga has made 181 tons. In addition, the enterprises have procured 157 tons of seaweeds, including 48 tons of laminaria, 14 tons of raw fucus and 95 tons of storm casted fucus.

On fresh-water reservoirs of Karelia fishermen have caught 2,000 tons of fresh-water fish: 172 tons of pikeperch, 151 tons of bream, 620 tons of smelt, 434 tons of whitefish. Divisions of fishermen were formed by 14 fishing enterprises and 214 sole traders.

In the new year 2012 the fishermen of Karelia have also had a good start. In 15 days of January fishing enterprises engaged in deep-sea fishery have caught 2253 tons of fish, including 1546 tons of cods and haddocks, and 708 tons of Atlantic herrings.
