OREANDA-NEWS.  January 22, 2013. ArcelorMittal has been named a winner by the European Institute of Purchasing Management (EIPM). The company won in the ‘value creation - organisation and knowledge management’ category of the EIPM’s 2012 Peter Kraljic Awards, in recognition of its outstanding bottom-line value creation. The award specifically recognises the transformation of market intelligence data and supplier information into 'total cost advantage', reported the press-centre of ArcelorMittal.

Other winners included Sanofi, Vodafone, L’Oreal, Bekaert and Lyonnaise des Eaux.

More than 200 companies took part in the process; ArcelorMittal entered for the first time in 2012, with the results announced in December last year. Denis Alvarenga, general manager, global purchasing (pictured second from left), received the award on behalf of the company.

“We decided to participate in 2012, mainly with the objective of using their assessment tool as a valuable external benchmark to challenge our own internal best-in-class model and to fine tune our dashboard of key performance indicators (KPI) and targets. The fact that we won was a welcome bonus,” said Davinder Chugh, GMB member responsible for shared services.

The EIPM Peter Kraljic Awards have been held every year for the past 16 years to recognise procurement organisations that act as role models for others in delivering outstanding procurement performance, especially in these challenging times when procurement and supply chain play a crucial role for companies worldwide.

Commenting on ArcelorMittal’s achievements, the jury said: “This award recognises ArcelorMittal’s outstanding practices in value contribution, transforming market intelligence data and supplier information into total cost advantage. (...) We have seen clear evidence of leadership behaviours, and of strong customer focus: all processes and projects are geared to customer needs upstream and to customer satisfaction downstream”.

Each of the eight award categories reward the accomplishments of procurement teams in key areas such as talent management, value creation, risk management, supplier relationship management, sustainable future and process management. Global healthcare leader Sanofi was recognised as the organisation of the year.
