OREANDA-NEWS. Belarus’ chemical company OJSC Grodno Azot has come up obstacles and hindrances while trying to purchase a stake in Lithuania’s cargo terminal for transhipping nitrogen fertilizers: the deal has been put on hold for objective reasons, a source in the profile ministry told.

In a bid to facilitate exports of nitrogen fertilizers,

OJSC Grodno Azot is negotiating a deal to purchase a stake in Lithuania’s cargo terminal for transhipping nitrogen fertilizers.

However, unlike Belaruskali’s latest purchase of a Lithuanian cargo terminal, OJSC Grodno Azot will find it hard to make a deal with Lithuania. The problem is that Belarus does not export nitrogen fertilizers all the year round, unlike potash fertilizers. The bulk of nitrogen fertilizers produced by OJSC Grodno Azot is sold on the home market. The aforementioned circumstance complicates negotiations, the ministry official explained.

As previously reported with reference to Belarusian Premier Mikhail Miasnikovich, OJSC Belaruskali on April 18 acquired a 30% stake in the Klaipeda terminal BKT for USD 30 million. According to Miasnikovich, a similar deal was in the oven for OJSC Grodno Azot.

Grodno Azot was set up in 1963 and transformed into an open joint-stock company in 2002. The Belarusian government holds a 99.97% stake.

Grodno Azot is Belarus’ main producer of liquid ammonia, nitrogen fertilizers, methanol, caprolactam, biodiesel fuel.
