OREANDA-NEWS. Tata Power Delhi Distribution, a joint venture of Tata Power and the Government of Delhi, which distributes power in North and North West Delhi, organised a Renewable Energy Fair at Dilli Haat Pitampura, Delhi on August 24, 2013. Over 100 RWA members and 500 students participated in the event along with TPDDL employees. The fair was also open to the general public.

The fair was a part of the celebrations of 'Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas' (Renewable Energy Day), in remembrance of Rajiv Gandhi, the former Prime Minster of India, and his vision of taking the country into the 21st century through the application of modern science and technology.

The fair was aimed at creating an awareness among people regarding renewable energy and to promote development and implementation of renewable and alternate energy devices and technologies. It was organised in association with the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Management Centre, Delhi. The centre is Delhi's nodal agency for the implementation of the programmes of the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, of the Government of India and the Government of Delhi.

At the fair venue, the information about the benefits of renewable energy was disseminated through display of science models, exhibitions panels, mini seminars, quiz contests and conferences. The theme for the competitions / programmes was “Renewable Energy and its Effective Utilisation”. The competitions evoked good response among the younger generation and some 100 students participated in the competitions.

“The present-day development model has endangered the environment and ecological balance with disastrous consequences to natural resources. It is highly energy-intensive and calls for excessive consumption of non-renewable sources of energy. If things continue to move at this pace, before the end of this millennium, the world will run out of all its conventional sources of energy. It is high time for us to focus on renewable energy sources and evoke interest among the youth, common people, policy-makers and environmental activists. Renewable energy, which appeared to be a mere bright idea, a few years ago, may be the only solution for the ever-growing energy demand of mankind,” said Praveer Sinha, CEO & ED, TPDDL.

TPDDL works on various projects to preserve and regenerate the environment in its area of operation. It is a member of the Greening Agency within the Department of Forest & Wildlife, Government of Delhi, and is committed to promote tree plantation. Its drive 'Harit-ek-Pahal' is aimed towards enhancing the green cover at different locations in its distribution area. Under the initiative, over 20,000 saplings have been planted at offices, schools, colleges and RWA parks. The initiative has the support of the Delhi Development Authority, which suggests the sites for the plantation, as well as the Department of Forest, Ministry of Environment, which provided saplings.

TPDDL has been aggressively creating energy conservation awareness though its Energy Club programmes comprising students from over 100 member schools. TPDDL is also sensitive to the aspect of climate change and is committed to introduce energy-efficient and greener technologies. It has also set up solar power plants in its network ranging from 25KW-1MW. It has also launched a Bachat Lamp Yojna initiative for its consumers to promote the use of energy-efficient CFL bulbs.
