OREANDA-NEWS. The annual People in Power Awards 2014 took place at the Arches in Glasgow last night and was kicked off by John Stewart, Director of Human Resources, introducing SSE Ambassador Sir Chris Hoy as a speaker at the event.

Speaking about his SSE Ambassador role, Sir Chris Hoy talked about his life, his career as the most successful Olympic cyclist of all time, and his new role as an Official Ambassador of Glasgow 2014.

Sir Chris Hoy is leading SSE's team of 12 Commonwealth Games Ambassadors from the 4 home nations and providing support and advice to fifty young athletes who have been selected for support from SSE's Next Generation programme.

The evening hosted by the National Skills Academy for Power, the awards rewarded individuals and teams for their work or the standard of training and education they provide in the sector.

The six categories helped to identify, celebrate and inform others of the breadth of talent that exists within the Power Sector and, in addition, helped raise the importance of the quality of training required and the need to tackle serious skills challenges, helping to achieve greater UK competitiveness, which is now more important than ever before.

Nominated for 3 categories, SSE managed to scoop two awards.

John Sharpe of the SSEPD Tree Cutting Team won the award for "Power Safety Person of the Year", whilst Colin Fraser of SSE took to the stage to collect the award for "Power Graduate of the Year".

Despite not winning the 'Power Team of the Year' award, the SSEPD Arran and Kintyre Storm Response Team were recognised for their hard work during the severe storms at Arran and Kintyre last year.

John Stewart said: "It was a great event with SSE Ambassador Sir Chris Hoy providing a really interesting insight into his life and career. We were very proud to have won two of the six awards.

The best part of the evening, however, was when it was decided that the proceeds of a charity raffle would go to Maggies, the cancer charity. A total of ?1,141 was raised."
