OREANDA-NEWS. Scotland's newest entertainment venue has won a major architectural prize.

The SSE Hydro, designed by architects Foster + Partners, received an award at the annual The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) dinner in Glasgow.

The groundbreaking design of The SSE Hydro has already become an iconic part of Glasgow's skyline and drawn some of the biggest live acts since it opened last September.

The judges praised the design of the building as a: “Dramatic new landmark arena…Superbly lit it becomes a night-time beacon.”

The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) announced 13 winners, representing the very best of current Scottish architecture, at its annual awards dinner held in Glasgow.

The judging panel included Marjorie Appleton FRIAS, Doug Read PPRIAS, Liz Davidson OBE Hon FRIAS, Craig White RIBA and George Oldham RIAS RIBA, representing the Royal Institute of British Architects.

Iain Connelly, President of the RIAS, commented: “83 submissions from throughout Scotland, ranging in cost from £26,000 to £125m, is a tremendous vote of confidence. It absolutely confirms that this award, in only its third year, is now the single most important recognition of architectural achievement in Scotland.”

SSE is the title sponsor of the 13,000 capacity auditorium located in Glasgow, which enables SSE to offer customers advanced access to tickets as well as the chance to upgrade into exclusive customer lounges at the venue.

Wendy Barbour, Director of Commonwealth Games and Sponsorship, said: “The SSE Hydro is a fantastic venue and we're delighted to be able to offer our customers benefits via ssereward.com to energise entertainment and help them enjoy memorable experiences there as part of our sponsorship agreement.”
