OREANDA-NEWS. Scottish Hydro Electric (SHE) Transmission is calling on applicants to sign up for the annual intake to the popular Trainee Engineer Programme.

The Trainee Engineer Programme lasts for three years and combines work based experience with university study. The deadline for applications is Sunday 1 March 2015.

Vic Stirling, SHE Transmission’s Head of Performance highlights the importance of the programme. “SHE Transmission projects leave a positive economic and educational legacy by using local businesses and workforces wherever possible. All of these projects need employees with specific skill sets and that’s where SSE’s industry-leading trainee engineer programme is designed to fill the demand for Power Transmission engineers.

“SSE’s fastest growing business is SHE Transmission. Over the next decade, this arm of the business will see its core activity in construction, alongside ongoing requirements to operate and maintain the Transmission system. We’re investing in trainees because we know we’ll continue to need a growing and developing workforce, with exactly these types of skills, to help us keep the lights on, now and in the future.”

Working within the Transmission, Power Distribution or Generation business, trainees have a unique opportunity to study for a Foundation Degree in Electrical Power Engineering which is the equivalent to the first two years of an Honours degree. In the first year trainee engineers will attend either Aston University in Birmingham or Inverness College, in Scotland.

As well as learning core subjects, such as engineering, science and maths, successful applicants will spent time on placements at depots, power stations and control rooms, working alongside experienced engineers.
