OREANDA-NEWS  India has started exporting gin to Russia, while continuing to import Russian vodka, which grew 3.6 times in the first half of the year, according to RIA Novosti analysis of data from the Ministry of Trade and Industry of India.

Thus, the supply of vodka from Russia to India in January-June amounted to 750 thousand dal, an increase of 3.6 times compared to the same period last year. In turn, India exported 130 thousand dal of gin to Russia in May-June 2023 in the absence of supplies of these products in 2022.

"Indeed, gin (from India - ed.) is represented in Russia. ... Radico Khaitan is one of the largest Indian producers of alcohol, which supplies its products to Russia, it is in a large retail. There are also smaller producers," Alexander Stavtsev, head of the WineRetail information center, told the agency.

According to him, such a gin at the moment is quite a "niche story", including because of the price, which averages 3-4 thousand for 0.7 liters. In turn, two-thirds of the Russian market is occupied by domestic producers, and the price of their goods is about 1000-1100 rubles per liter.

Stavtsev also noted that the prospects of Indian gin will depend a lot on the pricing policy, and Russian vodka can be competitive both in cost and quality.

"There are several companies that made a fairly large bet on the export of vodka, it was a full-fledged export sector, the leaders of which were Rust and Beluga Group. But our exports were cut off... Naturally, our companies are looking for new markets and India is a very promising direction for this," he concluded.

"Russian–made vodka is of interest in India - our products are very different for the better from the local vodkas produced. To the taste of the Indian consumer, it turned out to be more attractive than European vodka producers," said Veniamin Grabar, president of Ladoga. He noted that the company is already cooperating with India on whiskey and plans to start working on gin.
